چکیده

We consider the generic regularized optimization problem β̂(λ) = arg minβ L(y,Xβ) + λJ (β). Efron, Hastie, Johnstone and Tibshirani [Ann. Statist. 32 (2004) 407–499] have shown that for the LASSO—that is, if L is squared error loss and J (β)= ‖β‖1 is the 1 norm of β—the optimal coefficient path is piecewise linear, that is, ∂β̂(λ)/∂λ is piecewise constant. We derive a general characterization of the properties of (loss L, penalty J ) pairs which give piecewise linear coefficient paths. Such pairs allow for efficient generation of the full regularized coefficient paths. We investigate the nature of efficient path following algorithms which arise. We use our results to suggest robust versions of the LASSO for regression and classification, and to develop new, efficient algorithms for existing problems in the literature, including Mammen and van de Geer’s locally adaptive regression splines.

Piecewise Linear Solution Paths for Parametric Piecewise Quadratic Programs

Recently, pathfollowing algorithms for parametric optimization problems with piecewise linear solution paths have been developed within the field of regularized regression. This paper presents a generalization of these algorithms to a wider class of problems, namely a class of parametric piecewise quadratic programs and related problems. By using pathfollowing algorithms that exploit the piecew...

Trace Solution Paths for SVMs via Parametric Quadratic Programming

The performance of SVM models often depends on the proper choice of their regularized parameter(s). Some recent researches have been focusing on efficiently building all SVM models against the regularized parameters, thus defining a task of tracing the regularized piecewise linear solution path for SVMs. It has been widely known from an optimization view many SVM types can be formulated into qu...

Approximate Solution of Sensitivity Matrix of Required Velocity Using Piecewise Linear Gravity Assumption

In this paper, an approximate solution of sensitivity matrix of required velocity with final velocity constraint is derived using a piecewise linear gravity assumption. The total flight time is also fixed for the problem. Simulation results show the accuracy of the method. Increasing the midway points for linearization, increases the accuracy of the solution, which this, in turn, depends on the...

Another look at linear programming for feature selection via methods of regularization

We consider statistical procedures for feature selection defined by a family of regularization problems with convex piecewise linear loss functions and penalties of l1 nature. Many known statistical procedures (e.g. quantile regression and support vector machines with l1 norm penalty) are subsumed under this category. Computationally, the regularization problems are linear programming (LP) prob...
